CHAPTER 28

Ji-woo’s Suite

Hotel Ambasciatori

Venice

1:14 PM

Ji-woo’s eyes opened. “Who are you?”

A middle-aged man in a dark blue suit standing aside her bed answered in Italian-accented English. “I am a doctor.” He turned his head and called toward the door. “She is awake.”

Kang entered the bedroom redressed in his tux minus tie and smiled. “Welcome back to the living.”

Ji-woo’s face sprouted confusion, and she pulled back the sheet to reveal she still wore her gown from the previous night and addressed Kang. “Why are you here? Why is a doctor I don’t know here?”

Kang answered. “He’s a friend. He’s going to keep an eye on you a little while longer. But you’re going to be fine. You’ll just feel a little foggy for a few more hours, right, doctor?”

The doctor said, “Yes, that is correct. I will wait in the other room while you talk.”

The doctor departed, and Ji-woo addressed Kang again with confused concern. “What’s happening to me? What happened last night?”

Kang moved the chair from the nearby vanity to the bedside and sat. “You started feeling very lightheaded at the ball. So, I brought you back here. You passed out on the way.”

“But I thought you left because you weren’t feeling well.”

“Yes, I did leave. I was waiting for my rideshare when you messaged me and said you were feeling really bad too, and I came back for you.”

Uncertainty covered her face again. “I don’t remember any of that. Where’s my purse and phone?”

“On the nightstand next to you.”

She reached over to the nightstand to her right, picked up her little gold purse, removed her phone, and scanned the messages. “Hmm. Well, I was really out of it, I guess. I don’t remember sending those messages to you. I last remember talking to this tall, charming couple with wolf masks on. And the man brought us all drinks and….” Her face flashed mortification. “Oh no. You think he dosed my drink?”

Kang nodded. “The doctor thinks so.”

She frowned. “That’s so messed up. That’s—” Mortification overtook her face again. “Oh no. What must the guests, fans, and media think of me now after seeing me being carried in here passed out? It’s another disastrous scandal for my movie, even worse than Drake’s.”

Kang said, “No worries about that. Another friend who works at the hotel gave me access to bring you in through a private back entrance and bring you up here without any guests, fans, or media witnessing it.”

She sighed, relieved, and smiled. “Thank you so much. You’re truly an amazing man, you know that?”

“I’m just a humble working man.” He stood. “And speaking of which, I need to get back to work.”

She sat up against her pillows renewed. “I was, um…thinking about the perfect ending for the screenplay we talked about. The one where the humble working man comes to the film festival to meet the starlet. I thought the ending would be maybe they fall in love and live happily ever after. Now, I realize that’s kind of a clichéd, old-fashioned ending.
